Anterior Open

What is it?
The Anterior Open scoliosis approach is where the surgery is conducted through the chest walls instead of entering through the patient's back.

Why is it done?
The Anterior approach was designed to correct the abnormal curves in the spine that occur in the condition known as "scoliosis."

The Operation

The patient is placed on their back after anesthesia, intubation and placement of monitors.

Incision
The incision is made in the patient's side. The surgeon deflates the lung and removes a rib in order to reach the spine.

Hooks and Rod Placement
Hooks are placed along the vertebral bodies and then a rod is inserted. The rod is then tightened into place.

Final Tightening
When all of the implants are securely in place a final tightening is done.

Incision Closure
The incision is closed and dressed.
